Summary
"Have a Good Life", a Global Grassroots sponsored project, aims to install a clean water access point and organize sanitation and health workshops in a mountainous community in Rwanda.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
This locally initiated project is led by 20 residents of Nyarugenge, Rwanda. Living in a mountainous area with no water access, they are forced to walk 1 hour to find only dirty water for their households. High levels of disease are rampant in the community, women are often sexually exploited in exchange for water, and lack of water serves as a trigger for family violence. This project would benefit 200 families by giving them access to clean water and public health trainings.
How will this project solve this problem?
A water access point will be installed in Nyarugenge. In addition, the team will organize community trainings on personal hygiene and the importance of clean water in disease prevention.
Potential Long Term Impact
Within a year, over 200 families in the community of Nyarugenge will have access to clean water, reducing illness, sexual exploitation and violence associated with poor water access, while community workshops will have a positive impact on hygiene.
Project Message
Women who are vulnerable are sexually exploited for water, which spreads HIV.
