We support grassroots Native American efforts to re-introduce traditional foods to the family table. These foods have long kept Native peoples healthy and diabetes-free.
For Native Americans, diabetes is not only a concern--it's a crisis. This disease affects Native peoples MORE THAN ANY OTHER GROUP IN THE WORLD. In some areas over half of all Native American adults have diabetes. Worse, this “adult onset diabetes” is now reaching significant levels among children. Most diabetes programs do not support grassroots Native project leaders--yet these are the experts who know what it takes to create healthy lifestyle changes that last.
Seva's Native American Program has supported garden projects for more than 10 years. Your support will go directly to enhance a standout project in South Dakota: To expand the garden and integrate it with a healthy diet support group for grandmothers
Seva will work with project leaders to develop culturally-based evaluation tools so we can measure how the project is improving health outcomes. We will share these tools with other projects. That means your support will reach far more!
