Women in rural Sudan regarded brick making as a male dominated sector for several years.
Recently, women started to produce soil block for local building projects.
Many women experience prejudice at soil production site. They also struggle to combine raising family with earning a living. To fight for equal rights and improved conditions in Omiling rural areas, Onura women have formed an Association called – Onura women in soil blocks Association, the aim of this group – open to all women working in the construction business. After they have produced the soil blocks for building projects locally, they will move their equipments in big cities and produce soil blocks as income generating activity. Suggestion which Hope Ofiriha appreciates very much – its mission to make women realize their potential.
The association was formed at a local conference in Omilling Sudan, organized by Hope Ofiriha as part of a project aim to improve women’s lives through active participation in the construction industry. Practical results of this project include adaptations of soil block presses and moulds to make them user-friendly to women. Women have also been trained in construction processes and business management.
Women of Onura are really motivated and they are doing their best to keep this project going. Hope Ofiriha shares with the same vision – but it prefers women to operate this project as an income generating ventures because the building sector is booming since the country signed peace in 2010.
The project has the potential of generating revenues, thus women will be able to help them and their families.
We are facing hard time in fundraising for this project but with positive attitude. Life has been hard for the poor in Onura rural areas, and also to our GlobalGiving Donors in USA due to current world recession. The local women understand this and they are waiting patiently. Hope Ofiriha is looking for 100 donors to give us only $10 each on monthly basis. In this way we will be able to collect the money in few months and help the women.
We thanks you all for being with us in this worthwhile project and Hope Ofiriha will be working with you until the need of this project are fully achieve. Next progress report will come after three months where we will provide you with detail report on the stages the project is making.
Thanks for your ongoing support!
