Mercy Corps continues to assist the survivors of Haiti disasters. Mercy Corps works with vulnerable communities in Port-au-Prince and in the rural Central Plateau and Lower Artibonite Valley promoting resilience and sustainable livelihoods. Our programs take innovative approaches and apply the benefits of technology to support under-served communities.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

The January 2010 earthquake dealt a tragic blow to a country where 55 percent of the population already lived below a poverty line of $1 a day. Still struggling to rebuild, many families have no means to support themselves. Harmful environmental practices have also harmed the country's vital agricultural land, decreasing production and leading to increased food insecurity.

How will this project solve this problem?

Transition from emergency assistance to long-term support that helps rural communities, entrepreneurs and youth to build a stronger, more self-sufficient country. Based on the needs of the country, Mercy Corps' projects on the ground fall into these three main areas: 1) Natural Resource Management & Alternative Energy Solutions 2) Agriculture & Food 3) Economic Development & Opportunity .

Potential Long Term Impact

Mercy Corps helps communities develop their own ideas to solve Haiti's most daunting problems. We're using innovative approaches to bring Haitians new social & economic opportunities and to make their country more secure, productive & just. We partner with local organizations to build the capacity of local people at all levels of government, business & civil society. Our goal is to create an environment where Haitians have the resources to withstand shocks & the opportunities to improve lives.
