Primary school children in Wakiso town learn better because they get a daily meal prepared on stoves that save 50% firewood. Similar stoves are promoted by the kids in their homes and communities.
You don’t study well on an empty stomach, however many children in Wakiso do come to school on just a glass of water and lunch boxes are not heard off. Providing kids with meals dramatically improves their academic performance. Firewood is the most commonly used source of energy for cooking but this practice leads to serious deforestation. Yearly Uganda loses 2% of its forests. This project will affect 170 children, their families and the environment.
We will build a simple kitchen structure with at its heart a firewood saving stove to cook the pupils’ meals. The children will as change agents promote similar wood saving stoves in their families and community.
Meals enriched with multivitamines dramatically improve the general health and academic performance of children. Engaging children in promoting of wood saving stoves helps reducing deforestation and creates a greater awareness for the environment
“I never thought that providing lunches and vitamines could have such a big effect” “Amazing how much wood can be saved with these stoves and what a financial difference that can make for a household”
