During the last nine week report card period for Goal Card here in Memphis, students have made tremendous improvements. The first nine weeks which occurred Oct. 20-21, 2010 was the baseline this school year. The second report card period (January 12, 13) reflects that students had a 50% improvement in grades; moved from 36% of students with satisfactory school attendance to 54%; an increase from 29% with satisfactory conduct to 45%; and a 57% increase in points earned. The points earned can be redeemed for gift items or banked/saved until the next reporting period to redeem. Contributions through Global Giving support the incentive portion of the Goal Card Program.
With volunteer coaches from International Paper, and the University Of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences, each individual student is provided with a mini engagement/counseling session to set goals for the following nine week period that will chart the course for further improvements. During the sessions, each student sets personal goals for themselves and is held accountable for participating in tutoring sessions, and other activities that will allow them to reach their goals. The third nine week report card period results will be seen in our next “Redemption Activity” that will occur March 30, and 31, 2011.
The staff at RISE (two program coordinators) have been given the opportunity to visit with the youth in their schools (Cummins Elementary, Georgia Ave. Elementary, LaRose Elementary, Vance Middle School and Booker T. Washington High School) during “lunch and learn sessions” that focus on financial literacy as well as to report on steps taken to reach their set goals. These sessions provide additional support for students and serves as a connector between the community where they live, the schools and the Goal Card Program.
For these youth, the improvements are tremendous since they generally do not have support systems in their homes that value education or with the capabilities to assist with academic work.
In an effort to encourage the Goal Card participants in Community Service Projects, a group of the participants along with volunteers will participate in a” 5K Coins 4 kids RUN & Walk” on April 2, 2011. A group participated in the Junior Achievement Bowl-A-Thon that was held Feb. 26, 2011.
