Springtime in St. Vratch

Springtime tend to be very busy for our 15 men. We created products for Bulgarian traditional holiday – Baba Marta /celebrated on March 1st /. We made beautiful martenitsa – made from white and red threads and corn husks.

After that we started to prepare products for Easter – small cute and fancy baskets and garlands. The funniest part was egg painting – men were very excited to combine different colors and materials with special technique – decoupage, and also to color eggs with marble paint – and the effect was just great. NAVA`s volunteers were an integral part of all activities and helped men in making the products.

We prepared presents for Easter - baskets with painted eggs it them and garlands also arranged with eggs. They were met with great interest and we sold them all to companies` and institutions` servants in Plovdiv and Sofia.

Our next idea is to make attractive products for summer but that will be a surprise. Stay tuned for more information soon!

Our 15 men already create beautiful products from corn husks

Behind the scenes
Behind the scenes

More than 3 months our 15 men with intellectual disabilities make variety of products from corn husks. All this would not be possible without the support of you – our donors all over the world. The therapy workshops help these 15 men to increase their craft skills and to communicate more intensively through workshop activities and common chats with volunteers.

We created products of Christmas theme in order to sell them on different charity bazaars. Some of them, especially the picture-like panels were welcomed and well received by people. Currently we prepare products for another big holiday in Bulgaria – Easter. We will make little baskets and egg holders, as well as greeting cards and wreaths. Of course, work doesn’t go fast because we want to involve men in every step of the craft-making process – that’s the idea!

We were invited to participate in Institution’s Christmas party. Our volunteers were dressed as Santa, Snow White and dwarfs. They prepared appropriate games and gave presents to all participants. The party was full of joy, hugs and smiles and many pictures with Santa and his helpers.

We would like to thank again to our supporters and donors for their help. Stay tuned for more news about our 15 adorable skilled men!

Our first workshop already brought the Christmas spirit in Bulgaria

8 volunteers from National Alliance for Volunteer Action took part in the first therapy workshop last Saturday in St. Vrach -Home for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Our 15 men were very happy to see young people who wanted to play and create in the same time beautiful crafts from corn husks. There were moments when you couldn’t say who was more excited to make corn crafts – men or youngsters.

The workshop continued more than two hours and everybody made bracelets and flowers. Who said it was easy? But it was certainly fun! These 15 men were greeting everyone and wanted to hug and touch the volunteers. The atmosphere was so friendly and many crafts were made for that short time.

The teacher Margarita suggested making items related to Christmas theme – like stars, flowers, Christmas tree toys, wreaths and gift cards. So, the Christmas spirit is already in Bulgaria!

Most of our young volunteers are experienced in work with intellectual disabilities individuals in the past but with children. They realized that these 15 men are also like kids, just possessing older bodies.

Margarita Momchilova is well-known as one of the experts in making dolls from corn husks and they are part of UNESCO non-material cultural heritage. So, we’ve got one real professional working with us.

The workshops happen every Saturday and end with small treat as encouragement for our common well-done job.

We would like to thank again to our supporters and donors for their help. Stay tuned for more news about our 15 adorable skilled men!

Very soon – video from our workshop!

We are starting to create art in less than a month!

Intensive preparation is going  on for starting the occupational therapy workshop in St. Vrach - Home for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

During summer NAVA’s volunteers and followers are collecting raw material that is needed to create corn crafts. In order to start activity, the raw material needs to be collected and spread out in a premise with appropriate lighting, temperature , humidity and ventilation. After that the corn husks will be transformed into beautiful dolls, wall panels and straw mats.

Thanks to continuous donations through Global Giving platform, we succeeded to ensure an initial 18-month funding of the workshop at St. Vrach – Home for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities.

National Alliance for Volunteers Action ‘s team expresses its deep gratitude  to its hundreds of friends through out the whole world!

We are glad to know that now, by giving  the men from St Vrach the chance to work, entertain and communicate with young people – NAVA volunteers, we are helping  them to be self-confident and positive to themselves and the whole society.

We Did It!

Bulgarian version here

Nineteen hours and 23 minutes before the deadline, we successfully collected $5000 from 74 unique donors for our project to create an occupational therapy workshop for men with intellectual disabilities in Plovdiv!

From the bottom of our heart, we thank everyone who donated to our cause!

We also thank everyone who spread our idea among their networks – over 300 people actively shared our cause throughout the entire 30-day period!

Together we succeeded in surpassing this challenge to ensure an initial 18-month funding of the workshop at St. Vrach – Home for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities.  We also succeeded in obtaining the right to become a permanent member of GlobalGiving, where we will be able to promote our causes worldwide.

We, the team members of National Alliance for Volunteer Action, are inspired by our cooperative success.  We are glad that we have your support, as well as the chance to bring wonderful things to life together.  We believe that each person is endowed with the ability to contribute in creating good!

Once again, we thank you!  Please follow our progress when the activities – in the workshop you created – begin in May.  You can follow these updates on our webpage and on this site.
