Machik's Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) offers rural Tibetan students a dynamic and stimulating learning environment for 4 weeks each summer. The 2013 SEP will take place from July 12 to August 10.
Tibetans in China routinely face challenges including unequal access to quality education and programs that value and cultivate Tibetan language and culture. Rural Tibetan students, many of whom come from illiterate farming and herding families, are in need of education that not only provides the basic skills needed to subsist in a changing world-Chinese, math and science proficiency-but that serves to support and enrich connections to Tibetan language, culture and history.
International volunteers and local staff will collaborate with middle and high school students from across the Plateau to provide the opportunity to expand student knowledge in the areas of language, science, drama, photography, music and arts.
The SEP strives to train the next generation of Tibetan leaders by instilling the values of community service, cultural preservation and environmental conservation and by encouraging reflection on Tibetan identity in a globalized world.
