Berhampur and Aska, face a clean water & sanitation crisis. Project assists families in obtaining individual loans to build their own water tap and latrine in their home.
In Berhampur and Aska, 1% of households have toilets and 6% have water taps. Members of these communities rely on a public water tap for their drinking water source and the nearby pond/river for their bathing and washing water source. The lack of access to safe drinking water is compounded by poor hygiene habits, causing an increase in water-related diseases and child mortality. A study in the area showed 81% of households were interested in taking out a loan for a water or sanitation facility.
Project will provide each household in this area with the opportunity and resources to obtain a loan of credit to fund and build their own water and sanitation facilities. Project also includes health education and community development.
250 families will fund and build water sources and toilets in their own home. Clean, accessible water allows time other tasks and improves the sanitation and health of community. Project will act as a catalyst for other community-driven improvements.
