Give Life-Saving Care to Mothers, Infants in Haiti

Hopital Albert Schweitzer Haiti (HAS) is a referral hospital where more than half the patients are children. In addition to pediatric and neonatal care, HAS provides high-risk maternity care, and surgical, emergency, and internal medicine services.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Haitian women and children risk death from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth at rates vastly higher than any developed country. Most births occur in the home, which can be deadly for high-risk patients needing specialized care.

How will this project solve this problem?

HAS is making progress in ensuring maternal and child survival through community prenatal screenings and counseling and by providing 24/7 high-risk obstetric and neonatal care, unavailable elsewhere in the hospital's service area.

Potential Long Term Impact

HAS aims to reduce the incidence of maternal and infant mortality in Haiti's lower Artibonite Valley, where the hospital serves a population the size of Tampa, FL (350,000).
