Children with autism are often locked in a silent, lonely world. iPads offer a key to opening their world. This project will provide low income families in the Florida Panhandle with iPads to open their kids' world for communication and learning.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
One in 88 children are diagnosed with autism. Often locked in a silent world, they are disconnected from those who love them. Communication is the key to human interaction. iPad technology grabs the attention of these children and holds a key to unlocking their world. Autism Pensacola received a grant for classes to train parents in best practices including the use of iPads. These funds will provide iPads for families who complete these classes. This will unlock the world for these kids.
How will this project solve this problem?
This project will provide iPads to children whose parents have been through a 10 week training to master effective teaching techniques to use with their children, including the use of technology. Prepared to implement great teaching techniques, these parents will use these tools to open the world for their children. Children will use iPads as communication devices and to learn and practice social skills. The combination of knowledge and tools will unlock their potential and change their life.
Potential Long Term Impact
The ability to communicate is a fundamental, life long skill that makes the difference between being isolated and dependent and being connected and independent. These funds will change, forever, the lives of 10 children with autism and all who love them and interact with them. Lifetime costs of supporting an individual with autism is in the millions of dollars. By empowering even one person with autism with the ability to communicate, millions of taxpayer dollars will be saved.
