Since our last report, we have matched nineteen foster children with A Home Within (AHW) therapists; we’d like to thank you all for helping us achieve that!
This story is emblematic of the concerns foster youth bring to therapy:
Arriving at his first session with his A Home Within Therapist, David (name changed for privacy reasons) arrived late, sat back in his chair and began to ask the therapist a series of questions:
“So, are you moving soon...?”
“No” replied his therapist.“…will you go to jail for something?”“No” replied his therapist.“But, you will get married and go away, won’t you?”
“No” replied his therapist.
Each question is a direct reflection of David’s everyday experience, his fear of being abandoned, and his certainty that this relationship would be like any other – short.
The therapist assured him, for the first of many times, that she would be there. Of far more importance, she kept her word and kept showing up. She knew that it would take a long time to build trust in a relationship he could rely on.
At A Home Within we place one child, with one therapist - for as long as it takes.
Please pass this along, post it on FaceBook, Tweet it…and keep supporting us so we can support foster children across the country.
