Mobile project Update
Brief about the project:
DUNK!'s previous successes have stimulated demand from community groups for partnerships in implementing similar initiatives. This project is derivative of the needs identified for at-risk children to socialize, learn, play in a safe environment. In communities plagued by high levels of school drop-outs, illiteracy, unemployment and, idleness among youths at times leading to criminal behavior, the project will help build character and provide leadership training.
This is a 6-month project to be implemented in collaboration with established partners at three sites in impoverished communities around Accra. DUNK! will identify and train a cadre of youth coaches who will deliver 15 training sessions (5 per site), empowering each partner to take ownership of the project outcomes. The project also includes the construction of a Basketball Court in Kokrobite, a fishermen village.
Recap on the visit to Hebron (first report)
At Hebron, 23 former street children participated in DUNK’s young coaches training session. After the 2-hour session, 4 balls, a pump and 10 jerseys were donated to Chance-for-Children.
Development: Second Stop, the fishing village of Kokrobite
During the recent Christmas Holidays, 23 of DUNK’s members started the construction of a Basketball court for the fishing community of Kokrobite. DUNK’s Youth Committee had also decided to contribute towards buying the construction material. 4 days later, the court was built and the youth from the community could now enjoy their first Basketball Court.
Early January, DUNK’s young coaches made their way to the village to have their first training session with the youth for Kokrobite. 28 children were present to attend the session. The 3-hour session was so successful that the participants did not want to stop and were asking the coaches to stay longer.
Update from the field
The Youth from Hebron requested that our young coaches visit them again. The date set was February 8th.
The youth from Kokrobite are enjoying their new court. They train 3 times a week with the help of local coaches and teachers
