Summary

Honduras is the poorest country in Latin America with the majority of those struggling in rural communities. Phoenix set up their secondary school and college in 2008, opening their doors to nine surrounding rural communities. The community is now fully in charge of the secondary school and college with income generated on the ground to cover costs which has always been our philosophy - that the community take charge eventually. We will continue to support where we can.

Challenge

Honduras is the second poorest country in central America after Guatemala and the poverty is mainly found in the highlands of western Honduras. In these rural areas of Honduras 63% of the population live in poverty with 50% of that considered extreme poverty; this is where we work. In rural communities it is hard to get to primary schools close by and near impossible to get to secondary school or college. This leaves them with little opportunity to grow and develop out of poverty.

Solution

Phoenix brings secondary and college education to students in 9 rural communities using local teachers. By combining classroom and hands-on education in rural social responsibility along with implementing sustainable income plans the graduates can start on the front foot when they leave.

Long-Term Impact

The community is now fully in charge of the secondary school and college with income generated on the ground to cover costs which has always been our philosophy - that the community take charge eventually. We will continue to support the college when and where we can during 2023, especially with sustainable plans.
