Summary
This NGO day-care center offers meals and diverse educational activities at no cost for 60 children. The center allows their extremely poor families to work and/or seek familial sustenance.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Day care for 42 children, ages 4 months to 7 years old and for 18 teenagers. Their mothers were abandoned by husbands and are the only source of income for the family. They earn income by collecting paper and cans in the street. Most have 5 children, but nowhere to leave them while they try to make money. There are many needs, but our priorities are food and acquiring kitchen appliances. The day care depends on daily donations of food for the children.
How will this project solve this problem?
Providing meals, recreation, early childhood learning, drama, and play area with books; social, medical and psychological assistance; tutoring; I.T. skills; and sports for children who would otherwise be left unattended and risk becoming delinquent.
Potential Long Term Impact
Providing nourishing meals helps early childhood development and improves opportunities for mothers to gain steady employment. Family incomes rise and infant mortality decreases. Children are in a productive environment and stay out of harm's way.
Project Message
Poverty and lack of resources is an understatement when describing the living situation in this part of Brazil. Projects such as this are literally saving the lives of children on a daily basis.
