The project seeks to provide emergency assistance (winter shelter, water and sanitation support) to 500 flood affected families in Ladakh with the aim of restoring their lives.
The flash floods due to cloud burst in Leh on August 5, 2010 affected more than 20,000 people. Death toll reported by media and government stands at 148 with 700 missing making it one of the worst disasters in Jammu & Kashmir. Flood waters inundated large tracts of land & villages across locations. The state with army began its rescue operations and relief. Most important issue is to respond quickly to the needs of the survivors as heavy winter (upto -30 degree) will set in by 15th October.
This project will provide affected families with transitional shelter support to safeguard them from the setting winter, create access to safe water and sanitation facilities and minimize public health risks and reduce morbidity & mortality in Ladakh
500 targeted households in the affected areas will benefit from: - hygiene-related non-food item distributions before the end of the project period - access to clean drinking water - sanitation facilities - preparing for ensuing winters
