Girl Determined is a leadership project for girls aged 12-17. By facilitating girls' recognition of their personal and group potential they learn to avoid the pitfalls of trafficking, dangerous labor and other forms of violence.
Economic and political repression has led to extreme poverty as well as the sidelining of women's issues in the larger social justice movement. As such, girls, especially in this age group, have few social services available to them, including space to share and lack of female mentors. School drop-out, dangerous labor, sexual violence, trafficking and early marriage remain prevalent.
Girl Determined educates, connects and fosters the development of personal and group voice. We provide structured, weekly after-school leadership activities conducted by trained local facilitators. The strengths-based curriculum develops girls' decision-making skills, self-awareness, communications skills and critical thinking. The project goes deep to foster a 'can do' culture amongst girls, a step towards overcoming the gender norms that limited a girls' choices.
Girls become leaders in their homes, schools, communities and nations. Girl Determined is sparking a movement of girls with leadership skills to advocate for their own rights and a future that does not re-create the risks they now face.
