Almost Ready to get Girl's Computer Literacy and Leadership Program Started!!

FAVL Multimedia Center Hounde
FAVL Multimedia Center Hounde

Thanks to generous donations from the Mother's Day GlobalGiving Bonus Challenge, we have raised over $2000 for the Computer Literacy and Leadership Program. That's enough money to buy 3 computers out of the 5 we budgeted for! We're well on our way to getting the program set up for local girls to computer literacy skills as well as new technical skills such as research, writing, drawing and photographing as well as self-confidence which will help them in their future job searches. Once we are able to buy the 5 computers, benches and tables, we can get the program started at the already-existing multimedia center while we wait for additional funds for the rest of the supplies (paper, ink, etc.) to print the books.

Bringing Computer Literacy to Burkina's Girls

Girls who will be involved in the program

Donations for the Girls' Computer Literacy and Leadership Program are going strong. Thanks to generous donors we're getting closer to our goal of helping 50 high school girls learn computer literacy and in the process obtain valuable leadership and life skills like self-confidence.

At the moment, there is little access to computers in Hounde, and no computer training available for local high school students. However, technical skills are widely sought in larger cities as the world becomes more technologically literate and are important for students who wish to get ahead. Girls, in particular, have less opportunities to obtain computer skills and often lack the confidence to seek out these opportunities. Through the program, 10 local high school girls will be invited to attend five one-month long computer training workshops (for a total of 50 girls). They will learn basic computer literacy skills: how to use a mouse, type and use Microsoft Word, Publisher and Excel. They will use this knowledge to create their own poems, novels and illustrations in order to entertain, educate and empower other girls in their community. The books will be distributed to village libraries and will also be available for purchase.

On our way to teaching computer skills to girls

Local librarians working on storybooks

Thanks to generous donors, we have some start-up funds for buying a computer and helping girls to create their own books. We still need more help if we're going to be able to purchase a computer. The goals of the project is to train local high school girls in the town of Houndé in computer literacy and have them collaborate with local storytellers and health clinic staff to produce books in French and local language. The topics of the books will target girls and women and be both fiction and non-fiction. The girls will gain valuable computer and writing skills. The books will be distributed to village libraries in the Houndé area, and will be used by librarians to organize literacy activities for local woman.
