Just Like My Child Foundation has created a Girl Power Project that will gather and train 100 of the most at risk, yet promising Ugandan girls to become leaders and mentors for other girls. Once empowered with the necessary tools, these 100 girls will go back to their own communities to spread life-saving social survival skills through school-based Girl Power Clubs. The goal of these 100 girls will be to empower a total of 10,000 girls, igniting a shift away from harmful cultural behavior.
In the context of Uganda, sexual & gender based violence remains a serious human rights and public health issue. According to the Uganda Ministry of Gender, close to 70% of women have reported as having experienced sexual violence in their lifetime. As early as age 11, girls in the communities that Just Like My Child serves, face choices that will either lead them to a life of early marriage, childbirth and disease OR a life of education, economic independence and delayed marriage.
The Girl Power Project is a transformational program that targets girls in Uganda as they enter adolescence; the most vulnerable juncture of their lives. The project builds girls' positive self worth, and strengthens their critical decision-making skills in ways that empower them and steer them clear of vulnerable, life threatening situations. It cultivates girls who become bold enough to look you in the eye, strong enough to state their rights and free enough to lead their country forward.
The Girl Power Project will educate 100 girls to become mentors, allowing them to practice and share essential, life saving information and skills with an additional 10,000 girls within five schools, empowering the girls to reach their fullest potential while fostering community health promotion in a supportive environment. Each girl trained will carry with her valuable information for achieving a safe, healthy lifestyle and will continue to pass her knowledge to girls for generations to come.
After the training, I got the power to say no to men in my community who come asking for sex. This has helped me lead a better life.
