Summary

This project unleashes potential in African girls to transform from being victims into leaders walking in the fullness of their potential. Leadership skills, small innovative grants and shelter from violence will be provided to 100 000 marginalised girls in Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, Uganda and South Africa rural. By scaling up the Girl Empowerment Model we share best practices on empowerment of girls in all spheres of home, school and community. Programs are proactive and not reactive.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Girls in Africa face challenges that are widely acknowledged worldwide but whose response has been piece meal, reactive and disconnected.A critical mass is needed to stop gross violations of their rights and the silent genocide of girls perpetuated through harmful cultural practices. 50% of girls in Africa are sexually enslaved, out of school and might not live beyond 34 years due to poverty, HIV and AIDS and violence. Verbal condemnation has not stopped the loss of human potential.

How will this project solve this problem?

Our approach conforms to our notion of empowerment, which we define as a process of instilling girls with the necessary knowledge and skills, facilitating their confidence and determination and thereafter providing the financial means for a girl to come up with an innovative self help project. GCNW has girls empowerment clubs where girls give peer to peer support, Girls Empowerment Villages provide shelter from violence and Girls Empowerment Fund provides grants for girls innovative projects.

Potential Long Term Impact

By massively mobilizing 100 000 girls to empowerment programs we are making a statement on the urgent need to proactively eliminate gross violations of girls rights and ensure an Africa where girls enjoy their full rights and reach their potential.Girls who have emerged as leaders need support with training, resource mobilisation and setting up themselves to implement effective programs that promote their development. We are giving a fishing rod and not a fish for sustainable development.

Project Message

Girls are victorious and not victims. We have transformed thousands of perceived victims into leaders. What happened to me, my mother and grandmother should never happen to any girl again.
