Finally, on June 8th 2013, eleven young women graduated on Saturday from our ninth Get Ready for Girls program. Nine times! That's over a hundred teenagers who've gotten six months of intense support and counselling, kids who've become young adults with safe jobs, some of them their own families now. The occasion was celebrated with distinguished guests, Riverkids staff, staff members, students’ parents and friends of the girls.
Batch nine of our Get Ready Girls program started on December 5th, 2012 with nine girls. Susequently, two more girls joined the program. Today, three girls were reintegrated to the State School where one studies in grade 12, one studies in grade eight and one studies in primary school. Six other girls will go for further skills training with our NGO partners – four girls will attend classes at the beauty salon, one girl will attend cooking class and one will attend baking class. Two girls will continue with the next cycle until they are ready to go back to school or attend further skills training.
The girls are facing a much brighter future now that they have so much more confidence and hope than when they first joined us. Thank you so much for your support.

This is a very exciting month for batch nine of the students in our Get Ready Girls program. Our girls are graduating by the end of this month!
Our professional make-up artist, Andrea Claire who volunteered at Riverkids a few months ago is back in Cambodia on May 7th to do a refresher course with our girls. Back by popular demand, this is a skill that our girls are very thrilled with and is potentially an additional service they can provide at the beauty salons.
Our computer class restarted this year with a brand new curriculum that teaches the basic use of computer, typing and Microsoft office skills. It is especially useful for students to handle their school projects and thus, designed for older students such as our Get Ready Girls and higher state school students. Girls who are ready to return to the state schools next month will enter with such a useful skill that will even get them ahead of their peers.
By the end of May, we will be sending you photos of their graduation. Thank you so much for your support.
The Get Ready Girls under your support have completed half the journey of the six-month program.
This month, we welcome a new girl into the class. We also piloted a Direct Cash Aid program with three families of the Get Ready Girls. This cash assistance replaces the income that was lost as they have chosen to study instead of working. It has worked very well with our families and we’ve started implementing a new scale taking into consideration the number of children below 18 in the family, disabled member, elderly members over 50 years old and pregnant women.
We will continue to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of this scale so as to ensure that they will graduate successfully.
Besides the academic aspects of the curriculum, our girls are enjoying yoga classes, field trips to the Outdong mountain and learning about make-up, debt management, financial management and budgeting. Parents of these girls get to go through budgeting as well so that all members in the family have their priorities aligned.
In another three months, we’ll see them return to the state school and start apprenticeships in safe jobs. Let’s cheer them on and let them know that their dream of a better future is within their reach. Thank you very much for your support!
