Our First Program in Guizhou
Our first GECKO program in Guizhou province - February 2008. We worked in three schools, for one week each, to test the content we had developed.
What began with just a few powerpoint slides at that time has evolved into a full-curriculum program today, including our environmental footprint, clean energy, green career opportunities, and Chinese green heroes.
Introducing Waste as a Resource
We include hands-on activities in the program so students can use their creativity and learn about waste in a different way. They are encouraged to come up with concepts for crafts while learning how harmful plastic can be for the environment. We also provide a session for waste separation, challenging students to create their own garbage bins for paper, plastic and cans and setting up “green teams” to be responsible for emptying the bins and assuring that the waste gets properly taken away.
Creating Green Corners in School Libraries
We bring environmental books and magazines to every school that we go to. We encourage teachers to set up green corners in libraries so students can deepen their knowledge about environment. It is also a good way for rural students to practice and improve their English skills.
Teaching about Carrying Capacity
Through games and hands-on activities, we show students how our society is taking natural resources faster than nature can replenish them. This photo, taken with students in Hubei province last year, depicts a game which has become very popular. The students play fishermen and learn how cooperation, rather than competition for natural resources, enables everyone to meet their needs and lets nature sufficiently recharge.
