GAIN seeks to help women and children around the world gain access to the essential nutrients they need to lead healthy, enriched lives. In Kenya, millions of women and children are in the midst of the critical 1,000 days from pregnancy to a child's second year - when proper nutrition is essential for a child's physical and mental development. This project will help fortify the future by ensuring healthy pregnancies and nourished children.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Nearly half of all childhood deaths worldwide are caused by malnutrition. Poor nutrition is an urgent problem because the consequences are irreversible. If a child doesn't receive the essential nutrients she needs before the age of two, her immune system is weakened and she could die from common preventable diseases, or be mentally and physically stunted forever. When a child is stunted, it is harder to learn and becomes impossible for her to reach her full potential.
How will this project solve this problem?
There are simple, lasting solutions that can save lives today. Innovative solutions like multi nutrient supplements cost just pennies a day. These packets - filled with essential micronutrients - make it easy for moms and dads to sprinkle vitamins and minerals onto their children's meals. This has proven to significantly raise IQs and reduce deadly diseases such as pneumonia.
Potential Long Term Impact
Improved nutrition for pregnant women, new mothers and young children during the 1,000 day "window of opportunity" puts children on the right track to grow up healthier, smarter and more resilient to the effects of food insecurity. Improved nutrition can also increase a country's GDP by 2-3%.
