Emporment Through Learning

By a female, 16-21 years old, in Nairobi, Kenya
Map of EMPORMENT THROUGH LEARNING The Kenya National library service saw that many youths could not access their services due to either lack of libraries in different locations and also due to lack of time. They came up with the idea of mobile library whereby books were shelved in a normal bus and the seats were placed in a way to create a good study place.Charges to enter the mobile library bus was cheap compared to the amount one would use to travel to the local libraries. The light books and information was stored in the bus and soon its popularity hit the neighbouring towns. It was a very good idea and people started having a leading culture which was very important. The idea caught up and an extra bus was allocated to our region. They also had a programme whereby they could pick us and take us to the main library because the demand was too high and also they took us back home. I thank them for a work well done and the best part is that it is for free. I haven,t paid a cent to access the library services. Read more.

Education On Wheels

By a male, in Nairobi, Kenya
Map of EDUCATION ON WHEELS M-Learning is the short form of the word Mobile learning which involves teaching students on the move. A big empty bus with twenty computers and desks was used to facilitate this process. Studying for Windows packages took only six weeks minimum and the nearest place people could learn basic computer knowledge was in the town which was very far and prices there were enormous. M-Learning saw the need to offer computer classes to citizens at a cheaper and more closer place. this is where M-Learning originated. It took time to advertise but sooner they started getting new members who were eager to learn computer. It became a success and is now caters for over 100 students a day because it offers lessons for almost 2 hours a day. It is very cheap and through them I got my computer certificate and now am looking for a job in the city. Read more.

Reading Culture

By a male, 22-30 years old, in Kenya, Kenya
Map of reading culture A READING CULTURE CAN SAVE OUR YOUTH Extensive reading fertilizes critical thinking in a people. Reading daily newspapers regular publications and journals causes individuals to interact closely with national and world affairs. the ancient chinese understood the importance of books and quipped " A book is like a garden carried in the pocket", Developed nations encourage a reading culture among their people while their government alocate a sizable chunk of their budget to writting, research and publishing. Youth who read discover a wealth of information. the government needs to encourage youth by organizing reading contest through community libraries. these programmes will cause young people to shun destructive behaviour such as alcohol, drugs etc. a certain journalist & writer once said that "a book is the only place you can examine a fragile thought without breaking it, or explore an explosive idea without fear it will go of in your face". it is one of the few heavens remaining where a man's mind can get both provocation and privacy. which i agree with. We Are A Family

By a male, 16-21 years old, in Kakamega, Kenya
Map of WE ARE A FAMILY In the year 2006, our church which is called St. Barnabas in Lag'ata decided to help reduce the rate of transmission of HIV/AIDS. we were supported by an organization that used to move all over the country offering free blood tests and supplying ARVs to the diseased. They told us that as a church to look for any means by which we could inspire and advice people to take free blood tests so as to help people with HIV/AIDS and those who get accidents and loose blood at high percentage. We walked from school to school in the cities, other churches and also in market centers teaching people on the importance of blood donation and related effects. Many people felt that it was good to donate blood and so they asked us to prepare and set aside a special day that could be used for the process. We took a week to discuss an accessible, open and large place for this. We bought loaves of bread and sodas that could be given to the donors/volunteers so that they could regain their energy back. The process was successful and the blood was taken for testing and we were all happy for our mission to help the poor and sick was accomplished. Read more.

Education For Me

By a male, 22-30 years old, in Kakamega, Kenya
Map of Education For Me Illiteracy is what kills the economical and social way of well being in the society. Children who go to school tend to think more vibrantly than those who do not even after they grow into citizens in their country. Many communities especially those practiscing large scale farming and herding communities do not comply with the government push for education while they let their children go to farms and help them while others go to school. Even after introduction of free primary & secondary education, the sector still suffers a blow since only 50% of the goal is achieved so far. There is therefore need to ensure more students enroll in their schols. More schools are also supposed to be built to reduce congestion. Am personally taking initiative to train parents & guardians on importance to the youth. Read more.

16-21 years old, in Nyanza, Kenya
Map of Religious organisations are helpful during calamities During the date of April -03 -2010 - last year, I was a proud witness of the great entity in the open session of the great Global redemption against poverty by the church of the S.D.A in Kakamega. The helpped to donate funds for the displaced people. They provided food stuffs like flour, maize, beans, rice and oil. This encouraging factor of charity knows its best. Now the little children can be, extensively get schooling, proper care and still retain their basic materials. It is a good bringing as this has helped to open up the road to enhancing unity and peace. the entire road of life led by the church in campaigning against child violence and child labour to teach political alliance, social virtues and sensitise the need for social development through Develop for global partnership for development. The church is a basic factamental organisation for a great deal of development. It has persistently preserved it heritage in that they are a helping hand in this entity. Read more.
