Saath Charitable Trust
SAATH was registered as a Public charitable Trust in 1989, They started the Integrated Community Development Programme, an approach that seeks to turn slums into vibrant neighbourhoods. SAATH caters to the multiple needs of the poor at once by providing them with one-stop centres, through which slum residents have access to services such as health, education, employment, micro finance and affordable housing.
They invest in human capacity of persons to manage their programmes in their communities. Communities co-invest with them and donors by for the programmes, deciding and implementing them. They engages institutions, corporates and individuals throughout the world as partners and supporters of integrated development in India.
SAATH was initiated with mission to make human settlements an equitable living environment, where all residents and vulnerable people have access to basic needs for development like health, education, essential infrastructure services and livelihood options, irrespective of their economic and social status.
SAATH designed Child-Friendly Spaces- a unique, 4-hour non-formal education course with an aim to later enrol them in formal education. With a steady influx of migrating families to urban settlements and poor quality of education, creating alternative education spaces for quality education has become important.
Objective of the Programme
The main and objective of this programme is to reach the Children of labourers and help them gain formal education eventually and there after making them skilled and self sufficient. Children from the slums, child labourers as well as children of labourers on construction sites all require a strong base in education and access to quality education. Dropouts from school need to be Continuously counselled and encouraged to go back to school. The education programs designed at Saath recognize this need and aim to bridge this gap.
Currently, there are 7 Child Friendly Space centres; 3 in the slums of Ahmedabad and 4 on construction sites. Through our CFS centres, we have steered more than 2000 child labourers and children of labourers back into formal schooling systems.
For overall development of a child during october to december, 2012 various activities were conducted at 7 child friendly centres. Following are the brief description of kind of activites conducted at various centres.
In Vasna Center, Guptanagar, teachers
trained the kids in the Gujarati Language. The kids were asked to read simple words and write Vowels. Kids were taught to identify Big and small numbers. The kids were also taught to identify drawings and Colour and writing A,B,C,D in English. Along with education the kids were also provided Snacks, milk and fruits of different types which had vitamins, Nutrition and calcium. The kids learnt importance of participation and team work.. Dusshera, Diwali and Christmas festival were celebrated during this quater. Along with the celebration children were awared about the importance of celebrating these festivals.
In the Fatehwadi (Juhapura) Center, Teachers taught basics of Gujarati grammer and how to do simple additions from 1 to 10. Children also learned to identify various animals and vegetable through indoor games and activities. New words in Gujarati were taught to them through stories this kind of activities are very helpful in mental development of child. Along with education they were provided nutritious fruits and snacks Durings this quarter children at the centre celebrated various festivals like Dushhera, Diwali and Christmas. During Navratri festival garba programme was organized at the centre and all the children participated in that festival.
In the Behrampura (Khodiyarnagar) CFS, kids were taught numbers and words, signs and symbols in English and Gujarati. Also they were asked to write down paragraphs from Gujarati story books, simple multiplication sums Moreover, during this quarter a session was conducted by expert who gave information on vitamins and its importance in physical development. Craft work was taught to kids and also they drew sketches and painted them.
SW Park – Naroda
In SW Park Naroda, kids were taught to make paintings from numbers and alphabets. Also they were taught the difference between ascending and decending numbers. To increase their basic knowledge about the human body an activity was conducted, general information about human body parts and their functions were explained. Songs related to vegetables and fruits were also played.
Festivals like Dusherra, Diwali were celebrated at the centre. Along with the celebrations importance of festival were explained to the children. Sweets and snacks were also distributed.
SW Park - Vasna
At SW Park Vasna Center, Shahwadi, kids in the centre were taught grammer also they were taught addition and subtraction and new words in English and Gujarati language. Children also learned name of the days. Along with the indoor activities outdoor activities were also conducted.
Moreover, Kids were given balanced diet that can lead to their physical and mental development. Various songs and stories based on moral were also told. Kids also learn to write and speak numbers in words and figures in both English and Gujarati.
Kids also learnt names of various fruits and vegetables along with the names and types of vehicles. A measle vaccination programme was conducted in the month of October along with that in the same month routine health check-up of children were conducted. Also during the quarter parents meetings were organized where information about overall development of a child was given to the parents.
Devnandan Supreme – Vastral
A it was a new centre opened at a new construction site more emphasis were given to activities rather than education. More sessions on story telling, games and songs were conducted so that newly enrolled child would adjust easily to the new environment. During October a measle vaccination programme was conducted Also meetings with parents and builders were organized. During Diwali a session on safety awareness were given to the children.
In Umang Lamba, kids were told stories and songs on various themes. They were given a rich diet so to help them grow. Word and number identification in English and Gujarati were done. Various festivals in the month were also celebrated in during the quarter, children had a great fun during diwali they learnt how to make an rangoli. Craft work was taught to kids and also they drew sketches and painted them. They played outdoor games that helped them get physical exercise and also games that help them have mental growth.
ü Workers keep on migrating to different sites and different cities which creates a hindrance in tracking trained children.
ü Lack of funding stops from opening up of new classes.
ü Stationary, Toys, Teacher Expenses, Snacks are becoming costlier.
ü The attrition rates of students are increasing.
ü Children are from scattered age groups and so the activities cannot be standardised.
ü Education is a barrier to the parents of such children and thus it takes time to make them aware and understand the importance of getting their ward enrolled to CFS.

A balghar teacher brought Ashiyana Ismailbhai Shaikh to fatehwadi CFS centre, she was a child labour then, she didn’t know how to read or write. In the centre she learnt all the basics of reading and writings. She was a quick learner so once she mastered the basics, she was then admitted to STP course. After completing the course Ashiyana gave exam and after clearing the exam she was admitted direcly to fifth standard. “she regularly comes to school and she is one of the brightest students in the class and actively participates in all the activities and we are really happy with her progress”, says Ashiyana’s class teacher. Ashiyana has big aspirations, her first goal is to complete her studies.
kadri shabnam Amjadali was a migrant from Bihar, she and her family were doing labourwork in Ahmedabad. When her parents came in touch with CFS centre coordinator they were a littlebit hesitant. They didn’t want to send her to CFS centre but after intense counseling and assurance that she will be provided pick-up and drop facility then they agreed to send her. Shabnam was then enrolled to the center. “ She is very itellegent and has a sharp memory, learning’s provided at the center help her in reading and writing gujarati and English. She now wants to give exam and want to enroll her self in 5th or 6th standerd also looking at her growth now her parents are also willing to continue her studies says, Firdausben, Fatehwadi CFS centre coordinator .
We are looking at fund raising of Rs. 1.48 crores in next two years for education children from slums, child labourers and children of labourers on construction sites. The cost of running one education centre is Rs. 2 Lakh per year.
To reach out to at least 3,000 child labourers and children of labourers and providing quality education in at least two more slums in Ahmedabad.
