Change To Organic Farming

46-60 years old , in Busia, Kenya
Map of CHANGE TO ORGANIC FARMING Many farmers in the rural area would like to convert from conventional to organic productionbut lack the necessary skills to apply. "Organic production in many people believe it is simply the non use of chemicals. But organic production goes beyond zero use of artificial fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides and pesticides. It is a way of life a style of producing healthy products by undertaking valueing and respecting the integrity of the people and the environment in which we live. For small-scale farmers, conversion to certified organic production is a challenge. They have to fulfil a long list of requirements including some which are quate different from traditional farming practices. Knowing the requirements as well as an undertaking of the allowed substances for pest and disease controls is imperative. Some companies which export organic products contract farmers groups for organic production and they usually offer training. Because of high cost of certification, which has to be repeated every year, small-scale farmers have to be organised in contactable producer groups. In the group, the certificate fee is divided between the members. Read more.

Volunteering To Reach Out For Others In Need.

By a male, 31-45 years old, in Kakamega Central, Kenya
Map of VOLUNTEERING TO REACH OUT FOR OTHERS IN NEED. My name is Geoffrey Barasa aged 40, married with 4 children. I am involved in the County development affairs since 2009. I have laid down my life being a pastor, for orphans sponsoring two of them up to form 4. I have also founded 2 Self Help Groups to respond to the needs of the community. I am the treasurer of the Kakamega County Forum and member of the Pastoral Training Centre to provide formal education and literacy. In doing so we empower the members to live productively so as to overcome poverty. I also get out of my way to support some widows at a very personal level, this fulfills my joy to affect others positively. Therefore I have felt good contributing to the community's development. For some of these engagements to continue on, I really wish I could get in touch with any form of support. Read more.

Due to alot of pot holes on the road it used to take more than 2 hours to reach Kisumu from Kakamega. Besides time consuming, the road used to cost the vehicle owner alot of headache to high rate of repair pf their vehicles. Also ot was a cause of high theft and robbery during the night as the vehicles move slowly on the highway.
