Forest restoration efforts continue in Nyungwe

Thanks so much for your support of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s forest restoration efforts in Rwanda. We are pleased to report that we are continuing with the active restoration of key hillsides in Nyungwe National Park covering around 50 hectares, which had been devastated by the 1998 fires. We hope to significantly scale up these efforts in the future to restore this fantastic forest park to its full glory.

The photos show the restoration efforts in progress as well as the mature forest that these plots will one day resemble. Felix Mulindahabi, pictured, is the chief of WCS’s Ecological Monitoring team in Rwanda and has been involved with forest restoration efforts since the first trials in 2001.

In addition, WCS recently conducted a new analysis of the growth rate of trees when the smothering blanket of bracken ferns—which impede their growth—is removed, in order to quantify the carbon benefits of this restoration effort. We hope to use the analysis to raise further funding for this work through the sale of carbon credits, and thus ensure its long-term sustainability.

From all of us at WCS, thanks again for your interest and support of this important project!
