Healthy Cooking Class

Healthy Cooking Class
People's Grocery's healthy cooking class is free for residents of West Oakland and teaches both kitchen skills and nutrition. While we work to increase access to healthy food, we are also ensuring that everyone who wants to knows how to cook with nutrition in mind. (view small | med | large | orig)

Our Garden at the Historic California Hotel

Our Garden at the Historic California Hotel
The California Hotel is a vital part of Oakland's history. During segregation, it was one of the few places African-American entertainers could stay in the Bay Area. The hotel saw performances by many music legends. Now a public housing development, People's Grocery has created a large garden and greenhouse behind the hotel where residents can enjoy some outdoor space and delicious produce. We've also just completed work on a mural depicting the history of the hotel to connect the garden to the space. Visitors are welcome! (view small | med | large | orig)

Planter boxes at the California Hotel

Planter boxes at the California Hotel
When our gardens needed more room at the California Hotel site, our ag team built planter boxes, filled with greens and painted with quotes from social justice leaders. We believe access to food is a human right. (view small | med | large | orig)
