This project will raise startup funds for the first 20 hoophouses for cold climate season extension growing, and build farming capacity in collaboration with impoverished Twin Cities area communities
As a Growing Power Regional Outreach Training Center, the Women's Environmental Institute is designed to provide training, education and a more equitable distribution of local, fresh and organic food and practices of community sustainability. WEI's top priority is community empowerment to promote environmental justice by eradicating food deserts and their health effects (diabetes, obesity, hunger, poverty, ill health and community fatigue) in the Twin Cities, Minnesota region.
By building hoophouses in collaboration with communities and teaching organic biointensive farming practices (including composting), we will increase community access to low-cost, locally grown, organic foods, health and sustainability commitments.
WEI is committed to education and collaboration in the communities we serve. The project offers healthy foods access to at least 3000 people living in local food deserts as well as knowledge on growing food sustainably for a healthier community.
