There is a wishlist posted that includes desktop computers, printers, file cabinets, display cases, art supplies etc. Items must be received before July 31st to make the August barge departure. "Contact Us" on the school website for more information (and see attached poster and website link).
Annual Science Fair draws crowds: Children from the primary school were curious and impressed as Ocean Academy students demonstrated concepts such as flubber, fireworks in a bottle, keeping cool and of course, the ever-popular volcano eruptions.
Sports Day: Community members and tourists lined the beach to watch Ocean Academy students compete in sandcastle building, water runs to fill bottles with sponges, sack races, tug-o-war, slowest bike races and water balloon toss. In addition to being great fun, student teams showed sportsmanship and team spirit.

Ocean Academy Girls Eat Fire and Walk on Broken Glass
"Make It Happen", "Do it right the first time" and "Crazy People Succeed" were all messages imparted by motivational speaker Bert Oliva to Ocean Academy students last week. To demonstrate the power of self-confidence and mind over matter, students were invited to eat fire and walk on broken glass. Ocean Academy girls were at the front of the line and they did it! They can do anything!
Welcome Dr. Corinth Morter Lewis: School Counsellor
Ocean Academy feels blessed to have one of Belize's most experienced counsellors working with students and parents on campus Thursdays and Fridays. Mothers and Fathers filled the room for Dr. Lewis's first evening parent workshop: "How to Communicate with your Teenager".
Dr. Lewis was born in Belize City, educated in Belize and US, with a PhD from Alberta, Canada. She is a chartered psychologist, President Emeritus and adjunct professor at the University of Belize. Dr. Lewis's position is funded by a grant from the U.S. Embassy Belmopan.
Alumni Shania and friends visit Ocean Academy teachers
Shania is a former member of the Ocean Academy Female Leadership Community Club. Last June she graduated high school, and continued on full scholarship in Tourism Studies at the University of Belize.
Shania and three other alumni visited last month to talk with teachers about what life and studies have been like after high school and how Ocean Academy can continue to prepare graduates. Alumni gave praise for the academic preparation they had received as students, and many still visit our high-school teachers for tutoring in their Jr. College courses. However, all four guest alumni cited finances as a major barrier to continuing their studies at the tertiary level. Even Shania, on full tuition scholarship, has taken this semester off to earn money for mainland housing, meals and transportation costs.
Ocean Academy teachers and administrators are now trying to get creative in thinking about ways to help our students succeed post-graduation. What are your ideas?
FLC 's Cheyenne is President of school Interact Club
Cheyenne was elected as President of the Ocean Academy Volunteer Interact Club. Interact's motto is "Service above Self" and the group's keystone project this year is tutoring elementary-school children after school. On Valentine's Day Cheyenne and club members made posters and organized a group bake sale. Her club raised $100bz ($50usd) to support a classmate who is ill and also to buy cement blocks for the upstairs classroom construction project. The Ocean Academy Interact Club plans to do more fundraisers during the year for these good causes.
We're ready for Back to School with freshly painted classrooms, repaired furniture, and a clean campus. An attractive and welcoming school, we feel, encourages students to take pride in their campus and creates a positive learning environment. How did we do it all in just three days? Through the power of community teamwork and volunteerism! This was the Beautification Team:
It is with great pride that we introduce you, our supporters and friends, to Ocean Academy's graduating class of 2013! Your support played a huge role in this wonderful milestone moment. We know that you were all there with us in spirit at graduation (and some of you even made the trip to Belize!).
