Palm oil is an integral part of Cameroonian culture. Women in rural areas find it difficult to buy as it is expensive. SEREP will ensure that women in their Women's Groups can buy oil at a fair price. Miss Hannah, a volunteer who worked with this women project when she first came out through Original volunteer is currently holding this project up especially with the available funds that is keeping the project going while funds are being raised to reach out to a wider community.
Food is an important part of Cameroonian culture and central in family life. Palm oil is the basic ingredient in all traditional everyday food. The price of oil fluctuates throughout the year as oil becomes scarce. Women in rural areas find it difficult to afford. They are unable to save enough money to buy the oil in large enough quantities to ensure they can buy the oil at a fair price. It is a vicious circle.
SEREP will buy the oil in bulk when prices are low and sell the oil to their women's groups at a fixed price throughout the year. The women's groups will buy the oil from SEREP at a fair price. Women will be able to provide for their families.
Women will run the project within their villages. They will be accountable for saving and financing the project. The money saved can be reinvested in the family and educating their children. Initially 300 families will be involved.
A home without palm oil is not a happy home.
