Facing It Together: A Spanish Guide for Parents

Facing It Together is a unique home based program for new parents raising a baby with facial differences and addresses 5 key challenges like surgery, nutrition, family and going out in public. With an overwhelming request to have this book in Spanish, AboutFace needs financial support to re-produce the program and distribute it through the Hispanic communities and clinics in South West USA as well as Mexico and South Central America. Free copies are given to new families at the birth.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Each year over 100,000 babies are born in the USA with cleft lip/palate and other craniofacial differences. New parents need emotional support and information to help them cope; however most information is not available in Spanish. This language barrier, particularly in South-Western States, for parents who only speak Spanish is a great disadvantage. There is very limited resources available to help them understand and cope with the strain of having a child with a facial difference. We can help.

How will this project solve this problem?

AboutFace has 25+ years experience in supporting parents. It created a resource that offers practical and real examples of parents who have struggled with these issues. Facing It Together is a workbook and DVD that can be used at home and is visual. It has been very well received across North America for the past two years. We want to translate this book and DVD into Spanish and make it available free of charge to families through our network of Clinics supporting the Spanish community the USA

Potential Long Term Impact

The long term impact of this resource is incredible. New parents will feel a relief for the support and understanding it provides and it will impact the life of the children they are raising. By providing positive emotional support, parents will feel more comfortable and confident in dealing with issues. This will be passed down to the child, allowing them to grow up feeling good about themselves, having a positive self esteem and ideally set realistic and attainable goals for their future.
