The project will use youth-friendly approaches to increase young people's access to reproductive health information, services and other resources that will enable them make informed choices.
Most young people, especially in urban slums and rural villages, lack access to reproductive health. Most end up acquiring information from dubious sources, including porn magazines, peers or from adult videos...with disastrous consequences. Recent studies show that an estimated 400 adolescent girls give birth daily in Kenya, while another 10,000 drop from school each year because of unwanted pregnancy. An estimated 7,000 girls die from abortion-related complications.
The project will hold high-powered outreach campaigns; distribute IEC materials to young people; provide youth-friendly health services through mobile campaigns; use edutainment to engage the youth and offer individual counseling.
Young people will be equipped with skills, information and resources that will enable them become more confident, strengthen their leadership skills and make smart decisions regarding their sexual lives.
