KEEN (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now) provides free recreational opportunities to children and young adults with disabilities by pairing them with trained volunteers for fun, noncompetitive activities.
Recent statistics prove that children with a disability are twice as likely to have weight problems than typically children, due to limits in physical activities or options available. KEEN can help by providing a free and convenient program to these families. The urgency to teach children a healthy lifestyle in their early years is the driving force behind KEEN’s desire to be located in every borough by 2012.
KEEN is unique because it pairs each child with their own volunteer. This ratio provides the child with the extra attention they need to achieve their personal goals and build their self confidence. Activities include a sports and swim program.
Athletes of KEEN are taught the lifelong skill of exercise and help them become the swimmer, runner or tennis player they aspire to be. The benefits of the programs are far-reaching and significant even beyond the benefit of being physically active.
