EnsenaPeru seeks to turn education around in Julcan, a deeply impoverished rural area in Peru, transforming the lives of students in eight schools of two communities. We recruit and train outstanding young professionals to commit two years to teach full-time in the highest-need schools in Peru, where they aim to affect transformational impact on their students' lives by way of ambitious academic and personal growth.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Staggering need meets talent gap: in Peru only 1 out of 10 rural students performs at grade level, drop-out rates are staggering, and many students lack the exposure to dream beyond the perimeters of their villages. Julcan lacks established enterprises that could otherwise invest in the community, thus limiting access to resources for change. Despite the complex systemic challenges such communities face, history has proven that a high quality teacher is the number one driver of student impact.
How will this project solve this problem?
EnsenaPeru commits and trains Peru's most promising future leaders, placing them as teachers in areas of educational need for two years, charged with producing life-changing results in their students' academic and personal growth. Then armed with the understanding of the education challenge and the conviction that transformational impact is possible, they become agents of change in the education system. By 2016, 250 teachers will have impacted 11500 students in communities like Julcan.
Potential Long Term Impact
Short-term impact: Significant classroom results in academic growth to narrow the achievement gap, and personal growth in identified areas of character building to overcome poverty-driven challenges. Medium term impact: Students' life trajectories transformed to access greater opportunities. Long-term impact: Alumni deeply aware of the problems and opportunities in education become active agents of change driving systemic reforms and innovations from diverse professions and influence.
