Designing an irrigation system for the L'esperance Orhpanage to grow crops during the dry season, increasing the health of the children and helping the orphanage become economically self-sufficient.
During the dry season in Rwanda, from June to September, the orphanage can not grow crops due to the lack of sufficient irrigation. The children are at risk of insufficient nutrition, eating a simplistic diet of cassava, maize, and beans. Additionally, the dry season inhibits the growth of fruit tree seedlings, an income generating opportunity at the orphanage.
The irrigation system will allow crops to grow during the dry season. The children of the orphanage will have access to a healthy diet. The irrigation will also deliver water to the fruit tree nursery providing an income generating opportunity.
Through the fruit tree nursery, the irrigation system will help the orphanage reach their ultimate goal of economic self-sufficiency. The improved diet of the children will aid their development and provide greater opportunities.
