Engineers Without Borders is improving the capacity of district government offices throughout Malawi to provide the services necessary for sustainable clean water access.
In Malawi, up to 40% of all rural water points simply do not work. Water infrastructure is often driven by inaccurate information about the water needs of rural communities in Malawi. In addition, poorly functioning wells are all too often installed, as implementing organizations do not take local variables into consideration. When wells do break down, most rural communities do not have access to repair training or spare parts to fix the problem.
Engineers Without Borders is developing innovative solutions to map, monitor and repair water points to improve the ability of district staff to keep safe water flowing through rural communities.
We are aiming to decrease the number of faulty water points from 40% to 10% in Malawi over the next five years, in particular by scaling-up approaches that are improving widespread access to water, like our water point monitoring tool.
