MOBILE SCHOOL SCREENING

The Management of KEF observed that children between the ages of 11 to 18 studying in public sector schools were having refractive errors. Therefore the Hospital started an ambitious project in the name of MOBILE SCHOOL SCREENING - MSS unit. The main function of Mobile School Screening are as below
Identification of Refraction Services
Provision/Dispensing of glasses at the site.
Referrals of diagnosed or undiagnosed patients to KEF Eye Hospital.
Primary Eye Care (PEC) Services
Public Eye Healthcare Education Services
The direct target group of the MSS will be aged 11 to 18 suffering mainly from refractive errors and low vision. The MSS is working four days in a week to screen the eye sight of the students. The MSS will plan its activities according to the number of students enrolled in a particular school and will check around 200 students per day. According to medical estimates around 8 to 10% of all children tested will require spectacles, and will dispense these spectacles within next week. A detailed plan of action will be made according to different sector of enrollment.
This unit started functioning and upto-date 42,328 students screened 5127 children have been screened for refractive errors and 2944 numbers of Spectacles have also been distributed amongst the children, free of cost. This unit has visited different schools and Madrassas and successfully done 108 free eye camps. This Noble Cause has received great recognition and has widely been appreciated.
In the month June, 2010, MSS unit has screened the eye sights of 5121 students to identify the 502 refractive errors and 188 dispensing glasses.
