Update on the Desk Project for Calvary Primary

Children Show off Some of the New Chairs
Children Show off Some of the New Chairs

We are in a new school year in Uganda, and we are thankful for your help!

Thanks to you, we were recently able to add 100 new chairs to the Preschool and Primary 1 classes at Calvary Primary School in Uganda. One hundred children now have colorful, safe seats to replace old wooden benches. This gives the youngest of our students a safer environment. The benches we replaced had been in use since 2005 - can you imagine how rickety they had become?

We still want to get more of the three-seater desks for the middle-grade children, but for the time being we need to concentrate on school fees and food for the children.  Most of the safety concerns with the old desks have been addressed. The bigger priority at this point is to provide food for the children - since most do not have meals outside of school.

We are closing the desk project on March 31, so that we can concentrate on the need for food and school fees. Be sure to check out our education project on GlobalGiving - your donations will keep children in school and support the feeding program that provides two daily meals to students at Calvary Primary.

Thank you for making all of this possible!

Good News for our Kids in Uganda

Older students help the younger ones
Older students help the younger ones

Here at the end of our Ugandan school year, we have three good news stories for you!

First, students have taken their national exams. This is a tremendous milestone for our students. Many of them never thought they could finish primary school - and this year eleven of our students have taken the secondary O-Level exams!

Secondly, I'm happy to report that we are ready to complete the second phase of the desk project. A generous donor gave the remaing $2,500 to complete this part of the project, and Primary 4 & 5 classes at Calvary Primary School will have new desks for the next school term!

Every time the children see improvements at their school, they know somebody cares about them. When we believe that these young lives are worth investing in, they also believe!

Finally, today(December 3)is #GivingTuesday - and Microsoft's YouthSpark Initiative is doubling your donations to our education program!

If you give $20, they give another $20.
If you give $100, they give another $100.
If you give $1,000, they will also give $1,000.

To have your donation matched, use this link for our project  Education & Support For 500 Children In Uganda. Funds will go to support children in Uganda by paying school fees and providing food and supplies.

Thank you so much for lifting these children up and showing them that they can succeed!

The Test

Working hard at exams
Working hard at exams

Students recently finished mid-year exams. Thanks to YOU, the testing process is made easier with new desks in Primary 6 and Primary 7 classes.

Like any other Doctor, Nurse, Teacher, Lawyer, and others, have gone through that time were they are tested to find out what they are made of. Their dreams are being put to test by a piece of paper and a number of questions. A challenge accepted by many though a few make it. At this point, every child for him or herself. The test comes with a storm whose waves shake up many so as to unveil what they are made of.

Amidst these little bright children, we have those whose dreams  to become Doctors, Nurses, Teachers, Lawyers, Bankers, Administrators, Managers, among other dreams that are being tested. Attitude, character, will, patience to pursue their dream is put to test as well to find out who are made out of steel – because at this point, only the strong survive.

As many have lost hope, failed to accept the challenge and tossed by the storm, but these have chosen to seize the moment to pursue their dream amidst the storm called the “TEST”. With smiles so broad, they have accepted to face the challenge, pursue their dreams regardless of the hurdles with the aim of having a bright future.

As the TOUCH Office Uganda, we are so much grateful to our sponsors who include Friends of TOUCH, Africa Harvest Mission Inc, Calvary Temple Worship Centre, Missionary Teams, amongst others who have given in everything to give these little children hope, moral and financial support, education, medical care, school supplies and others.

Many are in school today because of the support you have rendered us and we believe that as we look forward to The Outreach To Unfortunate Children’s hurts (TOUCH).

Together, we will help many realize their dreams, to many hope for tomorrow and a bright future!

P.4 and P.5 Students are Ready for New Desks

"Testing" the new desks
"Testing" the new desks

Here we are in the second term, and all of our students are studying hard! Thanks to you, 135 students in P.6 and P.7 classes got new desks in March. Being first to get new desks was a great reward for the older students, who had been helping to repair the old broken desks - so they really felt appreciated when their new desks arrived.

The next classrooms to get desks will be Primary 4 & 5. We need just $2,000 more to finish and deliver the desks for these two classes and complete phase two of our desk project. Again, over 100 children will be helped in this part of the project.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS POSSIBLE!

The second term started at the end of May.  In this term, we're launching clubs where students can develop in the areas that interest them most. At the same time they're developing their skills, they will also be learning ways they can use their best talents and the things they enjoy to earn a living. We have visitors here working along with our teachers, helping students to complete special projects and working with Mama Sara and Mama Rose.

With the school filled to capacity at 500 students, finishing desks for these next two classes will be a great help!

We hope that you'll mark TOMORROWJune 12th on your calendar, because GlobalGiving will be matching online donations by 40% for up to $1,000 per donor per project - so your donation goes 40% farther! There is $90,000 available in matching funds, and GlobalGiving is rewarding $1,000 to the project with the most individual donors. So, this is the perfect time to give generously and to share the news about Friends of TOUCH!

You've Made 135 Kids Really Happy!

Students bring the new desks in with rejoicing!
Students bring the new desks in with rejoicing!

We’re happy to announce that 135 of our students are now seated in new desks! We couldn’t have done it without you!

The forty-five three-seater desks have arrived and are now in use. The children are very happy to have space to sit and work without being pinched or getting splinters, as was the case with the old desks. This will help them pay attention in class, without the distractions of jostling for space on a crowded bench.

Craftsmen in the local community built these beautiful desks, and the project benefits the local economy right where the children live. We also want to give a shout out to friends from Grace Community Church in Centennial, Colorado. They helped with the final desk assembly at the school last week.

We're so thankfull for YOU and the help you've provided to make this school a place where children can come and feel like they are special. It makes such a difference for them when you invest in their lives!
