Summary

This project will provide environmental education to increase awareness of the community by adapting curriculum for a school program with a focus on the protection of the lake along which they live.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Lake Villarrica is a large lake surrounded by the three communities of Curarrehue, Pucón and Villarrica. The lake is becoming polluted by phosphorus due to increased growth causing deforestation of the watershed, increased agriculture and grazing, storm water and domestic septic systems. The communities depend on the lake for their livelihood for drinking water, fisheries, and tourism revenues. School curriculum focused on their lake can teach these communities the benefits of its protection.

How will this project solve this problem?

To develop the school program focusing on lake protection in the communities of Curarrehue, Pucón, and Villarrica by adopting new curriculum for grade schools.

Potential Long Term Impact
