Summary

This program aims to empower young single mothers, who often raise their children without sufficient family and financial supports, to enable them to cultivate their self-confidence and participate in society as responsible individuals. They will build foundation of business skills through the program and become economically independent for their families after graduating . The program is also to be a main source of funds to run the program once the participants start selling their products.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

The Amanful Community in Cape Coast is a low income generating community comprising of fisher folks. Poverty is on the increase due to the low catch of fishes. Teenage pregnancy is on the increase. Many of these young mothers are abandon to fend on their own thus they drop out of school and upon giving birth, are unable to return as they have to take care of the babies by themselves. As they lack the skill needed to make ends meet, a number of them resort to prostitution to survive.

How will this project solve this problem?

These young mothers will be train in entrepreneurial skills to be able to be self sustainable. The teen mothers from the Amanful community along with handicapped women will be tutor in batik fabric dying, sewing, and local jewelries making. The training will last for three months each. They will also be given formal educational hours for those wanting to improve their literacy or return to school. The young mothers will also be given basic business skills to become economically independent.

Potential Long Term Impact

Hoops Care International has recently begun work to open a store in the center of the tourist district of Cape Coast. We also hope to partner with other handicapped individuals and a nearby special needs school to sell their jewelry, bags, and shoes. Our main goal for this project is to empower the young mothers we are working with by teaching them the skills necessary to make an income and to bring them together in a collaborative community project to begin to achieve sustainable funding.
