The safe motherhood project will reduce maternal and fetal mortality in Uganda by giving poor pregnant woman a chance to access healthcare in a hospital setting. Mothers will receive a full package of quality medical care including prenatal, delivery and postnatal services.The project aims to reach 800 women with prenatal care, assist 350 women during complicated delivery and provide post natal services to 600 women and their babies.
Maternal mortality is high in Uganda at 550 per 100,000 live births. Access to quality health care is a challenge and referral networks are not streamlined. 15% of pregnancies develop life-threatening complications that require emergency obstetric care, not readily available in lower health units. 58% of poor women deliver in their homes without supervision, leading to high rates of morbidity. There is need to ensure that poor mothers can access essential, life-saving maternal health care.
Poor mothers will receive a full package of quality medical care including prenatal, delivery and postnatal services. Through the community outreach strategy, poor mothers will be assessed, those with complications identified and referred for timely management in the hospital
The project aims to reach out to 800 women with prenatal care, assist 350 women during complicated deliveries and provide 600 women and their babies with post natal care services. This will go a long way to reduce fetal mortality and maternal mortality, as well as reduce complications such as fistula. Ultimately, it will improve the health and prosperity of households and the overall productivity of the community.
