Ensure a Safe Birth for Mothers in the West Bank

Summary

Midwives for Peace, a grassroots group of Palestinian and Israeli midwives, works to provide essential pre-natal and maternal care and to ensure safe deliveries for women living in the West Bank.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

In the West bank, pregnant women often face life-threatening obstacles to a healthy birth. When Israeli military checkpoints block the roads between a woman's home and a health center, she may be denied access to routine pre-natal care or to the assistance she needs to give birth safely. Many women have been forced to give birth at home or on the road without skilled birth attendants present-sometimes fatally.

How will this project solve this problem?

MADRE provides Midwives for Peace with "Safe Birth" medical kits and pre-natal supplements, and supports joint trainings for Israeli and Palestinian midwives. Midwives for Peace uses these tools to reach women in their homes and provide them with safe, healthy and happy births.

Potential Long Term Impact

The Palestinian and Israeli midwives who participate in this project come together out of a shared dedication to peace, to their profession and to women's health. Midwives will be able to ensure safe births, thus saving the lives of women and their babies in the West Bank. With your help, we can help welcome a healthier generation of Palestinian children.
