Scholarships and Support for students in Laos

Summary

Furthering educational opportunities for young financially disadvantaged Lao students through sponsorship of English classes, Scholarships for Secondary, Tertiary or Vocational Education and support for temple schools, which GVI has established. The goal of the Project is to disperse the funding across these several targeted groups of financially disadvantaged students. GVI aims to equitably support both girls and boys.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Many people from rural areas of Laos go to Luang Prabang to further their education. A high percentage of the boys enter the temples and become Novices in order to complete their primary and/or secondary education at Buddhist Schools. A second group is the disadvantaged rural students that have come to study at tertiary/vocational level. Without family support, they often come across serious financial difficulties. Laos is still considered one of the poorest countries with a high illiteracy rate

How will this project solve this problem?

The project will identify through community consultation, identification of Lao boys, girls, young men and women who are at risk of not being able to receive either a secondary, tertiary or vocational education and provide sponsorships for English classes and scholarships for secondary and post secondary education. GVI will also support the establishment of English classes in temple schools and assist with associated needs ie. resources, materials and equipment, salary for a local teacher etc

Potential Long Term Impact

Furthering a range of educational opportunities for financially disadvantaged but highly motivated students through this project, increases the capacity for these individuals to productively contribute to the economic development of themselves, their families and ultimately their country so that Laos is increasingly better able to effectively conduct itself on the world stage.
