New campaign

Dear supporters of the Bulgarian national Creative Writing Competition,

We will start soon the preparations for the 4th National Creative Writing Competition. The success of the project this year encouraged us to start planning earlier. The registration for the 4th national competition will happen in December and the actual competition day when the students will write their essays will be in February.  The regional and national judging will be in March and the Award ceremony in April. We will organize teacher trainings on creative writing between November and February in order to help the teachers feel more confident in preparing better the students for the competition.

This week we presented the National Creative Writing Competition in front of the new group of 28 English Teaching Assistants who are young Americans coming to Bulgaria through a program of the Fulbright commission. They will teach at Language High Schools and they all expressed a real interest to be involved in the competition. They will be a great asset in the preparation process.

Again, we will partner with the Ministry of Education and Science, US Embassy, Fulbright commission and the American University in Bulgaria.  We really hope that we could rely on your support in our efforts to raise funding for the 4th National Creative Writing Competition . We will keep you informed on our next steps.

Thank you for all your help.

Final Report BCWC 2013

The Bulgarian Creative Writing Competition in English has successfully concluded its third year, with the help of our supporters on GlobalGiving!

This year, more than 130 schools partook in the contest, and over 3000 essays were received from students in grades 6 to 12 from around the country. Students expressed great enthusiasm at the unusual topics—such as, “Why does a cactus have thorns?” and “What will the most popular film of the year 2050 be about?” –and our regional judging panels were impressed by the caliber of writing they were presented with. Of several thousand essays, our five regional judging panels worked hard to narrow the pool down to 105 finalists. These national finalists’ essays were then assessed in Sofia by a smaller panel of native speakers, writers, and specialists, with the top essays being selected for awards. The judges chose a variety of winners, ranging from comedic stories to touching memoirs and fantastical tales.

The awards ceremony, financed by our fundraising on GlobalGiving, was held in the Park Hotel Moskva in the capital on April 27, 2013. 21 winners and their English teachers came from all over the country to attend (once again, thanks to our GlobalGiving funds), and they were treated to afternoon creative writing workshops with Professors Michael Cohen (American University in Bulgaria—Blagoevgrad) and Rossitza Ivanova (University of Wisconsin-Whitewater/University of Veliko Tarnovo). After getting to know each other and picking up some writing tips, a formal awards dinner was held for the attendees. In addition to being awarded certificates, winners also received sets of books and English-learning materials as prizes from the U.S. Embassy in Sofia and Express Publishing. Several other special prizes were awarded by our other partners, including an autographed book prize by former Peace Corps Bulgaria volunteer and author, Cynthia Phoel, and scholarships to the AUBG summer English camp and an intensive 3-week SAT course, both on their campus in Blagoevgrad. Additionally, attending teachers received English materials as a token of appreciation for their hard work and support.

Shortly after, we also had the pleasure of unveiling our brand-new BCWC website, www.creativewriting-bg.com. From now on, the site will host registration information, pictures, updates and, most importantly, original copies of this year’s winning essays. We’re pleased to be able to share students’ talents with a wider audience, and encourage our supporters to see what talents their donations have encouraged to develop!

Also housed on the site is the new 2013 BCWC Newsletter, featuring a colorful summary of events, as well as photos from various writing sessions.

We would like to thank all of our donors on GlobalGiving, whose contributions made it possible for us to expand BCWC to such a great scale, and to provide our young writers with the encouragement and recognition they deserve! Thank you!

Bulgarian Creative Writing Competition Report 1

Prof. Assen Zlatarov School Vidin
Prof. Assen Zlatarov School Vidin

The Bulgarian Creative Writing Competition in English is officially underway, thanks to support from our donors on GlobalGiving! This year, over 125 schools have registered to participate, and nearly 4000 essays from public school students all over Bulgaria were created during the “creative writing week” – February 13-20. As a local teacher noted, "...It was the big day today. Students were really excited, they liked the topics and expressed their imagination..." Here are some of the topics: “Describe how a meteor feels as it flies through outer space,” “Explain what it must be like to be three meters tall,” and ”Describe the happiest man (or woman) on Earth.”

5 regional judging panels will review all submitted essays and will select the national finalists. The National jury will award first, second and third places to the best essays from each grade level. With the money raised through Global Giving we are able to provide certificates for all students, and a national awards ceremony in Sofia for the winners. We are excited to be able to carry out our project on such a large scale, and to reward students for their creativity. Thank you, donors, and stay tuned for announcements about the winning essays and awards!
