Summary

The most proven way to end torture is to provide citizens with attorneys at the time of arrest. This project will train 250 African defenders, promote their services, and link them to those in need.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

This project will serve those who have a stake in a fair and equitable criminal justice system in Rwanda, Burundi and Zimbabwe - the tens of thousands of citizens awaiting trial, the public defenders pursuing due process, and future generations yearning for a torture-free society. Moreover, it will help establish rule of law - the backbone upon which a nation can stimulate foreign direct investment and further economic progress.

How will this project solve this problem?

This project conducts legal aid training in partnership with Bar Associations in Rwanda, Burundi and Zimbabwe. It boosts legal rights awarness through the production and distribution of posters in prisons, police stations, and public spaces.

Potential Long Term Impact

This project will train 250 defenders, enabling them to collectively represent millions over the lives of their careers. In turn, this will spawn a generation who values – and fights for – the presumption of innocence and the abolition of torture.

Project Message

For the first time in history, we have a roadmap for the systematic prevention and abolition of torture. Please join us and help make this dream a reality.
