The My School My Community program aims to strengthen student engagement within school communities through the use of storytelling, self-directed videos and community campaigns. The program equips students and teachers with problem solving skills to address social and environmental issues that affect at-risk students. The program aims to improve school-based dialogue and decision-making around critical targeted issues.
At-risk students face critical social and environmental problems in and out of school such as bullying, gang violence, and teen pregnancy. The negative forces outside the academic realm significantly impact student achievement. Among at-risk students, apathy towards their school community weakens their sense of civic responsibility; attributing to less that 68% of students that do not graduate from NYC schools.
My School My Community empowers at-risk students to become agents of change within their school communities through harnessing the power of media. Students discover the power of expression while affirming their own unique voices that helps shape solutions for their school community. Through this process, students also develop critical academic, technical, and personal skills that are necessary for success in college and their future careers.
By developing students' sense of urgency and self-determination, students are likely to become strong, confident individuals who will share their valuable perspectives within the community. The program will support college and career readiness and improve future success among at-risk youth. The program's capacity-building approach offers students experience tackling issues in a collaborative, dynamic manner, with the goal of creating lasting change in their school communities.
