Empower Women to Achieve a Life Free from Poverty

70% of people living in poverty are women. Women are powerful forces for change, amazingly determined and resourceful in their fight to achieve a better future. The best way to end poverty is to strengthen women in their own struggles, helping them to unleash their own potential to change the world. ActionAid works with women around the world to help them achieve economic independence and a life free from poverty.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Imagine a system so stacked against women that despite their incredibly important role in feeding themselves, their children, and their communities, they have no access to equipment, loans, or fertilizers. That is the reality in much of Africa, where women are responsible for 80% of the farming but only 4% of those women own their own land, and only 7% of those women are able to access basic farming resources.

How will this project solve this problem?

Through the creation of Reflect circles- a space where women can come together to share new sustainable farming techniques, learn about their rights to land ownership, and practice their reading, writing, and math skills- ActionAid is helping women farmers take control of their lives and livelihoods. Reflect circles create supportive communities that allow women farmers to stand up- to their families, their communities, and their governments- and claim their rights to income and resources.

Potential Long Term Impact

With your support, ActionAid is working to end this injustice by helping vulnerable women farmers to organize. Money raised by supporters like you will give women living in poverty a chance to be financially independent while simultaneously helping their family and community in the process. These funds not only help individuals, but families and whole communities through advocacy work, trainings and reinvestment in local ventures.
