Empower Maya Youth in Genocide-Torn Community

Help rebuild a genocide-torn community in Guatemala by empowering its youth. Your gift provides educational opportunity to 52 middle and high school youth from an indigenous Maya village that was devastated during the 36-year civil war. They receive scholarships, school supplies, work opportunities, computer and internet access and training, library access, Spanish classes, life-skills trainings, career counseling, and mentorship, empowering them to overcome hardship and forge bright futures!

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

The indigenous Maya village of Chajul is tucked away in the highlands of Guatemala. The parents of today's youth in Chajul survived violence that amounted to genocide during the 36-year civil war. Today, the community remains impoverished and deeply scarred. For lack of resources and opportunity, fewer than 3% of the youth will graduate from high school. Fifteen-year-old Esperanza hopes to be a music teacher. She and her peers want to learn, to imagine, and to aspire to rebuild their community.

How will this project solve this problem?

Limitless Horizons Ixil's Youth Development Program offers youth like Esperanza a monthly scholarship to continue their education. Esperanza also receives Spanish classes, computer trainings, life-skills workshops, and work study opportunities. Perhaps most importantly, she receives mentorship from local program managers, successful women whose counsel and example help reveal to her a world full of possibilities and encourage her to pursue a life that overcomes her family's difficult history.

Potential Long Term Impact

Esperanza and her peers will graduate from the LHI Youth Development Program with the academic, personal, and professional skills needed to help their community repair from genocide. They are the future leaders and ambassadors of Chajul--doctors, lawyers, engineers, accountants, mayors, farmers, mothers, and fathers. They will be able to provide financial support for their families, and their children will grow up with parents who value education and can support them financially and emotionally.
