Summary

Help rebuild the post-conflict community of Chajul in Guatemala by empowering its youth. Your gift provides educational opportunity to 60 middle and high school youth from a Maya Ixil village that was devastated during the 36-year civil war. They receive scholarships and supplies, work opportunities, access to our community library and computer lab, Spanish classes, life-skills workshops, career counseling, and mentorship, empowering them to overcome hardship and forge bright futures!

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

The village of Chajul is tucked away in the highlands of Guatemala. The parents of today's youth survived violence that amounted to genocide during the war. Today, the community remains impoverished and deeply scarred. Due to lack of resources, fewer than 3% of youth graduate from high school. Since the war's end, there's hope for a better future and a renewed interest in education. Parents like Maria and Gaspar dream that their daughter Angelica will have educational opportunities they did not.

How will this project solve this problem?

We support parents like Maria and Gaspar who value education but lack resources to cover the costs of their children's schooling. Our Youth Development Program offers scholarships to youth like Angelica, alongside Spanish classes, tutoring, life-skills workshops, and work-study opportunities. Angelica also receives mentorship from local staff; women whose counsel and example reveal to her a world full of possibilities and encourage her to pursue a life that overcomes Chajul's difficult history.

Potential Long Term Impact

Angelica and her peers will graduate from the Youth Development Program with the academic, professional, and leadership skills needed to help their community recover from genocide and increase future educational opportunities. They are the future leaders and ambassadors of Chajul--doctors, lawyers, engineers, advocates, mayors, farmers, mothers, and fathers. Their children will grow up with parents who value education and can support them financially and emotionally.
